The FTSE100 index is a share index of the 100 largest capitalised companies listed on the London Stock Exchange. The FTSE100 price is calculated based several factors of each individual company all added together. The formula for the index price is sumof(Price of Stock * Number of shares) * Free float factor / Index Divisor.
The Free float factor is the amount of shares that are available for trading as a percentage of all issued shares. This is then rounded up to the nearest 5% for calculation purposes.
Created in 1984 the FTSE 100 started with a base level of 1000 and reached it’s highest value to date of 6950.6 in December 1999. The FTSE 100 fell dramatically during the recent 2007-2010 financial crisis reaching lows below 3500. It has since recovered to highest level since 2008.
The FTSE 100 Index is also know as ‘FTSE 100’, ‘FTSE’ or the ‘footsie’.
Most spread betting firms refer to the FTSE 100 as the UK 100 or something similar. The latest value of the FTSE 100 can be seen in the SpreadCo widget on the right of this page. Remember they refer to it as the UK 100.
